FOR more than two years Carys Nicholas has found it difficult to leave the house.
Born with spina bifida, her anxiety levels prevented her from socialising and her world was getting smaller.
But one day, with a new electric wheelchair and a specially-designed kitchen for wheelchair users, she decided things had to change and this week, Cardigan-born and bred Carys started a new hobby – Wheelie Scrumptious.
Carys had no previous interest in cooking or baking but now bakes up to three cakes a day, delivers them as far as her wheelchair battery will allow her and has set up a website of her home-made puddings and cakes to tantalize taste buds.
This is a huge achievement for Carys who hated entering the kitchen and had no faith in her culinary skills.
“I was scared of the kitchen and didn’t want to do anything in there. The hob would freak me out and I worried if any hot spits would land on me in my chair and I’d have a major panic,” she said.
“Then one day I got up and I told my partner I wanted to bake a cake. It wasn’t that hard and I enjoyed doing it. Now I bake cakes every day and I’m getting more confident,” said Carys, who had a 10- week session of hypnotherapy at Maes Mwldan to help her.
At first, Carys started baking for her friends and family members and felt overwhelmed when people said they’d pay her for her cakes. Now her Facebook page is proving very popular and orders are coming in quickly.
“People said they liked them and wanted more and I’m now delivering all over Cardigan,” she said.
“I’ve looked into the legalities of it all and I’m allowed to do it. It’s not a job to make money, it’s about getting me out and about and it makes me speak to people, where as before, I was too scared to leave my property.”
Carys says she has so many people to thank, from family and friends to her personal assistants and her partner Kirsty.
“I feel that taking control of my life has made me grow up. My electric wheelchair has given me freedom and getting it was the best move I ever made,” added Carys.
“I’ve lived in Cardigan all my life and have always been known as Carys in the wheelchair and now I’m known for my cakes. It’s positive and I’m no longer known as the poor girl in the wheelchair and I’m allowing myself to be happy.”
