From the pollution to the constant food safety scares to the endless temptations of excess calories, booze and sleep deprivation, Shanghai is a hot market for the health and wellness industry. In this series of profiles we introduce you to Shanghai's various practitioners, proselytizers and entrepreneurs of health and wellness.
Jeff Tan, Founder, REV
With over 20 years of pilot service in the Singaporean Air Force, as Jeff Tan prepared for retirement from the military, he began searching for the next thing. With an educational background in Counselling and Hypnotherapy he attended a Neuro-Linguistics Program (NLP) in 2003 and discovered a passion to help others as his calling. In 2006, he left the military, moved to Shanghai and founded REV—a multidimensional platform that employs the tools of hypnotherapy, consulting and coaching, to improve clients’ lives. The type of hypnotherapy he practices is based on the Milton Model which leads clients to a hypnotic state through conversation.
What is Hypnotherapy?
As explained by Tan, "Hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious, logical, and rational mind, and speaks directly to your unconscious mind.” In this way clients who are open to this style of treatment are able to overcome fears and addictions—the operative word being open, “I helped a man lose 11 kilos, people with fears of death, of flying, of enclosed spaces, who want to stop smoking and mild recreational drug addiction.” However, clients must be accepting of receiving treatment in this way and willing to commit to change, “They think I'll perform magic and they'll be cured. It's never a magic pill. It's something that you need to work on.” In this sense, hypnosis can be viewed in a similar light to religion, "for them, seeing is believing, but in hypnotherapy, believing is seeing, one has to have faith" adds Tan.
Founded in a technique pioneered by Milton Erikson, the indirect style of hypnosis employed at REV is known as "conversational hypnosis." Indirect language patterns structure language in such a way that your attention is focused and turned inwards, where it will search for meaning—using metaphors is fundamental to achieving this, Tan explains. "I usually engage in story telling about my own life, true stories that I apply metaphorically to someone's problem...” In this way clients are able to unconsciously find parallels in their own lives enabling them to reach a solution. "I think that hypnotherapy fits more holistically within psychology, psychiatry and medicine,” adds Tan. Prices for hypnotherapy vary case by case, but clients pay upfront and Tan will help you overcome your problem, however long it takes. "If you come to me, open-minded, ready to work, then I can, with your help, help you. Hypnotherapy takes time."
